Classical N-Grams

Stephanie Ann Frampton, Associate Professor of Literature

Classical N-Grams examines word frequency in Greek and Latin literary corpora to understand how certain words were used over time. The project will build digital tools to show the frequency of word usage in ancient texts, as well as the citations for the original text from which those frequencies are counted. In particular, the research team has developed a library of Greek and Latin terms that relate to the history of media and plans to trace their frequency and use across the corpus of Greek and Latin literature. Planned modifications include multilingual and multi-corpus searches, lemmatization, and expansions to the corpus/datasets. With these additions, the project will enable researchers to track how the meaning, use, and importance of specific words changed over time in the ancient world, and how different cultures approached these ideas.
